Insuring Michigan's Children

The State of Michigan has focused on several initiatives to guarantee that its citizens who are under the age of 19 have adequate health insurance. These health initiatives strengthen the state's economy through lowering the costs of health care -- thus helping all families have less stress as they meet the financial challenges of raising children in today's environment. Children who receive adequate preventive health care from conception onward grow up healthier, stronger, and more productive. They learn better and go farther in school because they feel better. By investing in the state's youngest citizens, Michigan is investing in its own future.

Michigan Healthcare Programs for Children

The MIChild Program is an effort by the state of Michigan to provide health insurance coverage to the uninsured children of working families. Offered through the Michigan Department of Community Health, the program offers affordable healthcare to all children through a sliding premium scale based on family income. To be eligible, the child must be under the age of 19. Uninsured children whose parents are not working may be eligible for Michigan's Healthy Kids program.

Michigan School Based Health Centers Program is an effort by the state to provide health care to children in a location that is centralized. These 80 health centers are becoming a model for the rest of the country as they provide convenient care to these otherwise underserved children. Recent grants from the Kellogg's Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation have strengthened the program.

These Michigan Medicaid Programs concentrate on those children at or below the poverty level. Of Michigan children who are insured, 71 percent are covered through their parents' employers' insurance, 29 percent are covered with self-pay policies, and 27 percent are covered by Medicaid. Nearly 9 percent of Michigan families are uninsured, and most of the parents in these families are working.
