Recent Health Insurance News in Michigan

As Michigan focuses on the future of all its citizens, the state has found that having a diverse, growing population presents challenges. While diversity stimulates economic growth and allows for a rich quality of life, it can also bring problems to the state that must administer services for all-including ensuring adequate health care. No one solution fits all. Because of the problems associated with uninsured families, Michigan has adopted several recent initiatives to make sure that the more vulnerable portions of its population have access to health insurance. The state of Michigan accepts its responsibility to its citizens.

Michigan School Based Health Centers This program is an effort by the state to provide health care to children in a location that is centralized. These 80 health centers are becoming a model for the rest of the country as they provide convenient care to these otherwise underserved children. Recent grants from the Kellogg's Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation have strengthened the program.

The Michigan Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program continues to ensure that any woman can receive screening and treatment for breast or cervical cancer even if she cannot afford health insurance or if the insurance companies consider her uninsurable. If a woman does not have health insurance coverage for these services, the state will pick up the health care charges as long as she meets the income eligibility. This program has recently focused on meeting the needs of Latina and Asian women, who have been previously underserved.
