Aetna
Founded in Hartford, Connecticut, the Aetna Insurance Company has been an insurance carrier for over 160 years. The company added health insurance coverage in 1899 after nearly fifty years of growth in the life and property insurance industry. The first health insurance plans were only sold to owners of the company's other types of insurance.
From its beginnings, Aetna was influential in offering new health insurance products, such as major medical coverage and the development of HMOs. Its 1996 merger with U.S. Healthcare and 1999 merger with Prudential Healthcare strengthened this area of Aetna's business. Today, Aetna is part of the Aetna Group and is a major carrier of all types of health insurance plans across the US. The company offers a number of plans specifically for the residents of Michigan.
