The Assurant Health Insurance Company provides Michigan residents a wide assortment of health insurance products. Part of the U.S. holdings of N.V. AMEV of the Netherlands, Assurant was formed at the time of the purchase of the Time Insurance Company, a U.S. institution founded in 1892. As AMEV grew in the U.S., it changed its name to Fortis and then to Assurant as it acquired other financial and insurance companies. Assurant now is traded publicly and specializes in insurance for the individual and small business owner. The company designs a number of individual and small group health insurance plans. It also sells these policies through its subsidiary company, John Alden Life.

Assurant offers other plans that reinforce a healthy lifestyle through routine medical services such as check-ups, preventive tests, and vaccinations. Individual health insurance plans are offered for college students, and short-term insurance is available when an individual is between jobs.
