United Group Associates was recently purchased by Healthmarkets. Its health care products will now be underwritten by MEGA Life and Health, a wholly owned subsidiary of Healthmarkets. The group was founded in 1981 to cover the health insurance needs of the self-employed, individuals, small businesses, and students. Today, this company offers health insurance in several states, including Michigan. Through innovative use of modern technology, the company strives to control costs to its members, while providing excellent customer service. The MEGA Life and Health insurance plans can be custom tailored to a business and its employees, in order to best meet the needs of Michigan families. MEGA Life focuses on flexible plans and preventive care – important for families with young children. Its tools for tracking costs allow customers to make informed decisions about which providers to choose for each procedure.
Unique features of the MEGA Life and Health insurance plans include the following concepts:
- The Maximum Allowable Charge (MAC), which is the most the plan will pay for a specified procedure. The patient knows from the beginning that this MAC is the most the plan will pay and that any additional costs will be paid by the patient.
- The Starwell benefit is a special form of Health Savings Account (HSA) that rolls over to the next year if there is money left over. Also, with this plan, there is no deductible or copay in the beginning of the year. If the amount saved for a calendar year is used up, then the insured pays a deductible and copays for the remainder of the year.
